Nel cuore di Milano, durante la primavera del 2023, l’assessore all’ambiente, Elena Grandi, ha quidato un’iniziativa che ha ridisegnato gli spazi verdi della citta e acceso dibattiti appassionati. Ispirandosi a citta attente all’ambiente come Francoforte, Milano ha deciso di ridurre la frequenza del taglio dell’erba nei suoi parchi e giardini, con l’obiettivo di creare un santuario per gli ecosistemi locali e offrire ai cittadini paesaggi naturali da godere. La visione dell’assessore Grandi era semplice: abbracciare la bellezza selvagqgia della natura e promuovere la biodiversita. I] suo annun- cio sui social media spiega: “L’erba dall’altra parte é sempre piu verde. Anzi, é piu alta. Francoforte ha scelto deliberatamente di proteggere gli ecosistemi e la bio- diversita. Milano fara lo stesso”.

In tie heart of Milan, during the spring of 2023, the councilor for the environment, Elena Grandi led an initiative that reshaped the city’s green spaces and ignited passionate debates. Inspired by environ- mentally-conscious cities like Frankfurt, Milan decided to reduce the frequency of grass mowing in its parks and gardens, aiming to create a sanctuary for local eco- systems and provide citizens with natural, untouched landscapes to enjoy. Councillor Grandi’s vision was simple: to embrace nature’s untamed beauty while fostering biodiversity. Her social media announce- ment explained, “The grass on the other side is always greener. In fact, it’s taller. Frankfurt has made a deliberate choice to protect ecosystems and biodiversity. Milan will do the same.”
Tuttavia, come per ogni idea innovativa, non sono mancate le critiche. Alcuni residenti hanno espresso preoccupazioni sulla sicurezza dei cani e sui potenziali rischi per la salute derivanti dal fiorire dell’erba alta, aggiungendo la loro voce al flusso di scetticismo che circonda il progetto.

Nonetheless, as with any innovative idea, there were critics. Some residents expressed concerns about the safety of dogs and potential health risks posed by the flourishing tall grass, adding their voices to the stream of scepticism surrounding the project.
The following cataloque invites an explora- tion of data that showcases Milan’s reaction to the high-grass experiment. It sheds light on untamed greenery and on the passionate discussions it triggered among the city’s residents, who shared their opinions through the platforms Facebook and Instagram.

The grass is always greener on the other side. It is even the highest. Frankfurt has made aclear choice to protect ecosystems and biodiversity. In many of the city’s parks, gardens and flowerbeds, the grass is left high and yet, children still play and people lie down in the lawns. We are trying to do the same in Milan by reducing the frequency of mowing.
