PREFACE.

We don't consider an apology necessary, in placing this work before the business public, and asking their consideration and patronage, because we feel conscious of having fully realized, when commencing this work, a need, which has been felt. We therefore send it forth, knowing that it has some defects, yet believing that it has sufficient merit to recommend it to the judg- ment of an intelligent public. We hope none will presume to judge of its worth without something more than a careless glance at its contents ; for we are persuaded that it will fully repay a more careful examination, as much care has been taken in its com-] pilation to render it an accurate guide to any who have occasion to consult its pages. The arrangement of the work we trust will prove more satisfactory than that of other publications of a similar character. It will be noticed that each State is under a depart- { ment of its own, giving the location after each name. To our patrons we return thanks, also to the officers of the Central Pacific Kailroad for their courtesies and kindly assistance.

CALIFORMA AND OREGON STAGE ROUTE.

The overland route from the California and Oregon branch of the Central Pacific railroad through northern California to the Oregon and California Railroad in Ore- gon, abounds in mountain scenery unsurpassed, if equaled, for grandeur and variety by any in the United States. Along the head waters of the Sacramento the scenery is varied and most beautiful. The route passes by the fa- mous Soda Springs, noted for the medicinal properties of its waters, and a summer resort of considerable note. Passes by the towering, awe-inspiring heights of Mount Shasta and Castle Rock, and through the rich and fertile valleys of Southern Oregon. The route is supplied with first-class Concord coaches, good, sound, gentle and reli- able horses and most excellent drivers. Xo trouble, pains or expense is spared by the gentlemanly superin- tendent and his employees to ensure the patrons of this line a vspeed}^, comfortable and pleasant trip. Traversing the State of Oregon from north to south by a great pub- lic highway, this line is truly of great importance to the people, and is every way worthy of the name of one of the best on this Coast, and the opportunities for viewing the grand and beautiful scenery above described are un- limited. The progress of the coaches being necessarily slower than would be that of the " Iron Horse," it afiords to the tourist and lover of nature ample time to see and enjoy the grandeur before him, and those advantages he will never regret having improved, but will look back upon as one of the most awe inspiring and pleasant journeys in his experience.

CENTRAL PACIFIC RAILROAD.

The Central Pacific Railroad, of California, the West- ern Pacific Railroad Company, the San Francisco, Oakland and Alameda Railroad Company, the San Joaquin Yalley Railroad Company, and the California and Oregon Rail- road Company, were consolidated during the present year into a new company, under the name of the Central Pacific Railroad Company.

The Central Pacific Railroad Company, of California, was organized under the General Railroad Law of the State of California, with authority to construct a rail- road from Sacramento to the eastern boundary of the State. By an Act of Congress, passed July 1, 1862, it was authorized to construct the Western portion of the Pacific Railroad, and the same provision for government aid was made in its favor as for the Union Pacific Rail- road Company, which was chartered by the Federal Government, for the reason that the line was wholly within territory subject to its authority. The act further provided ^that the Central Pacific of California might extend its line beyond the eastern boundary of the State, ^ and until a junction was formed with the Union Pacific Railroad, which commenced the construction of its line on the Missouri River, at Omaha, and to receive Govern- ment aid in ratio to the mileage constructed. By an amendatory act, passed by Congress April 4, 1864, the Central Pacific was made a body corporate, with authority to own such portion of the road as it might construct east of the eastern boundary of the State of California.

MISCELLANEOUS.

The CoDipanv possesses ample chartered powers, both from the States of California and Nevada and from the Federal Government.

For that portion of its line between Sacramento and the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, a distance of 7.18 miles, the government subsidj' is at the rate of $16,- 000 per mile in its 6 per cent bonds ; for the succeeding 150 miles through the Sierra Nevada at the rate of §48,000 per mile ; and $32,000 per mile for such other portions of the line constructed west of the Rocky Mountains. The government subsidy is a second mort- gage upon the road, the Comp)any being especially authorized by an Act of Congress to issue its own bonds equal in amount to the Government aid, as a first mort- gage on the road. In addition to pecuniary aid, Congress granted to it ten alternate sections of public lands on each side of the line of the road — or 12,800 acres per mile.

The work of construction was commenced in Febru- ary, 1863, and successive sections of the road opened as follows : From Sacramento to New Castle, 31 miles, in January. 1865; to Auburn. 36 miles from Sacramento, May 15. 1S65: to Clipper Gap. -12 miles. June 10, 1865; to Colfax, 56 miles, September 4, 1865; to Secret Town, 66 miles, Mav 8, 1866; to Alta, 73 miles, Julv 10.1866^; to Cisco, 94 miles. November 9, 1866; to the summit of the Sierras. 105 miles, Julv, 1867 ; to the eastern bound- ary of the State, 138 miles, January, 1868. In 1868, about 362 miles were constructed. On the 15th of April, 1869, the line was opened to Monument Point, on Great ! Salt Lake, a distance of 667 miles from Sacramento. It was opened to Ogden City by the 10th of May. 1869, at which time the same point was reached by the Union Pacific Railroad, when a continuous line was formed be- tween the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

summer of '61 in the gulches and defiles of the Sierras, until the driving of the last spike at Promontory at its final completion, is well known to all Americans who were interested in its progress. But familiar as it is it never ceases to be interesting, especially to Californians, for the Golden State was the moving power which brought this mighty project before the nation, secured its aid, and by that means accomplished that which to others seemed an impossibility.

Some years before the final act was passed by Congress, many self-reliant men felt convinced that the scheme was a practical one, and were sure that all that was ne- cessary was to have the matter rightly brought before Congress. Thus, it became in time a political issue, and none but railroad men could ba elected to those offices, the holder of which could injure or advance the pros- pects of the proposed road.

The name of Theodore D. Judah is one of the first that stands out in the memory of those who are familiar with the early history of the road, which, in the estima- tion of some, his genius brought into being. With the aid of his personal friends, C. P. Huntington, " Charlie " Crocker, Mark Hopkins, and others, who subscribed $50 a piece, Judah was enabled to test his theory by making a careful survey of the passes of the Sierras. He re- turned encouraged by his success; and the fall following $1,500 was raised and used in the same manner. The result of both surveys was favorable and greatly encour- aged this persistent, sanguine engineer. In '62 Judah went to Washington with charts, maps, etc., of the road. Sargent was there, as enthusiastic in the support of the measure as Judah. James H. Campbell, of Pennsylva- nia, and Schuyler Colfax were his most efficient supporters in the House. In the Senate, McDougal, of California, and Wilson, of Massachusetts, and Morrill, of Maine. There the battle was fought and the victory won. In Sacramento, on the 22d day of February, 1863, Governori

Stanford commenced the great work bj shovelling the first earth. Though the country was rent by civil war, and Sacramento was staggering under the devastating floodj Leland Stanford was all hope, all life, all energy. Xow that the work was fairly started another battle must be fought, a financial one. The 40 miles of road which must be built and stocked before aid could be received from Government, would cost at least §4,000,000. for that 40 miles carried the road through a great deal of heavy work. The corporators risked their fortunes, San Francisco assisted the work, the State and several counties did nobl}^ but the success of the enterprise was assured by the prompt liberality with which Fisk & Hatch, of Xew York, responded to the solicitations for aid made by C. P. Huntington. Now the work went on, but from the beginning until the summit was reached the Com- pany were derided in the colums of the California news- papers, and the road was called the '"Dutch Flat Swin- dle," especially while laboring to overcome the heavy grade near that town. On Monday, the 10th of May, 1869, a large company gathered from the four quarters of the Union, met at Promontory Point to witness the driving of the " Last Spike," and be partakers in the glorious act of uniting the East and West. The hour and minute designated for performing the ceremony ar- rived, and Leland Stanford, President, assisted by other officers of the Central Pacific, came forward ; T. C. Du- ! rant, Yice-President of the L'nion Pacific, assisted by General Dodge and others of the same Company, met them at the end of the rail, where they paused while a reverend gentlemen invoked the Divine blessing. Then the last tie, a beautiful piece of workmanship, of Cali- fornia laurel, with silver plates on which were suitable inscriptions, was put in place, and the last connecting rails were laid by parties from each company. The last spikes were then presented, one of gold from California, one of silver from Nevada, and one of gold, silver and

iron from Arizona. President Stanford took the ham- mer, made of solid silver, to the handle of which were attached the telegraph wires, and with the first tap on the head of the gold spike at 12 m., the news of the event \vas flashed over the continent. Speeches were made as each spike was driven, and when all was completed, cheer after cheer rent the air from the enthusiastic assemblage. When the sun sunk low toward the western summit the long trains moved away with parting salutes from the locomotives and ihe celebration was ended. AUBURN, the county seat of Placer County cannot be called, as can nearly all mining towns, a blot on an otherwise pretty landscape. It is one of the neatest looking, home-like towns in the county. The busi- ness portion has a substantial appearance, the build- ings being of brick and stone, fire-proof ; the private residences ornamental, because they are cozy and are surrounded with an endless profusion of fruits and flowers. The public buildings, court house, etc. are good, and neat grounds surround them. The principal hotels of Auburn are the American, Orleans I and Railroad House. There are two excellent

schools and two fine church edifices. Auburn is a distributing point for a large extent of country lying east of ^he west fork of the American River, and all of that section of El Dorado County lying north and west of the American River. Stages run daily to Pilot Hill, six miles; Cave Yalley, six miles; Greenwood, twelve miles; Georgetown, 16 miles; Forest Hill, twenty-one miles ; Michigan Bluffs,

[This is the oldest firm in the city; first established in the Spring of 1850, under the style of "Forshee, Booth & Co.," composed of John Forshee, L. A. Booth, and Job Dye. The two latter gentlemen retired in the Spring of 185 1. About the same period Charles Smith and Newton Booth established business under the name of Smith & Booth. After the fire of 1852, L. A. Booth became a member of the firm, which was then known as Booth & Co. Kleinhans & Co- established in 1852; Theodore P. and D. Kleinhans, partners. The latter firm united with the house of Booth & Co. in 1856; L. A. Booth, C. T. Wheeler, T. L. Barker and the Kleinhans constituting the firm. The Kleinhans retired in i860, and Newton Booth again entered the firm. L. A. Booth and T. L. Barker retired from the firm in 1862, and J. T. Glover became a member. This firm still continues, and that, too, with all the surroundings of prosperity. Its business relations extend not only through the northern and southern counties of the State, but also through the entire State of Nevada. 3

CHICO. — Chico, the largest town in Butte County, is distant from Oroville. the county seat, twenty-five miles in a north-westerly direction ; is connected with that place by stage. The Oregon Division of the Central Pacific Railroad, passes through this place, thereby connecting it with Sacramento, which can be reached in three hours. During the sum- mer a weekly line of steamers is run between the two places, on the Sacramento River, from whence Chico is distant six miles; but during the winter months it becomes necessary for a daily line to be plied, for the transportation of grain and other pro- duce. Agriculture has been the chief source of support of the people of Chico, but recently, that is within three or four years past, a new interest has become of importance, that of the lumber trade, the lumber being of fine quality and commanding a ready sale. Placer and hydraulic mining is carried on in the neighborhood, and that of the latter at Cherokee Flat, (twenty-two miles distant, are quite extensive. There is one weekly newspaper pub- lished here. The Northern Enterprise.

COLFAX, like Alta, is a regular eating station. It is a neat looking little town, with an air of comfort about it. It seems quite level compared with the towns above it, though it has an elevation of 2,421 feet. The Company have a nice large depot here, this being the distributing point for freight bound for Grass Yalley, Nevada, fs^orth San Juan, and a large scope of mining country. This place is named in honor to Schuvler Colfax, and contains about one thousand inhabitants.

Minute attention is paid to the comfort and health of pupils, and in case of sickness they 'fJ5 receive the most maternal care.

The course of studies is pursued in the English Language ; but French, German and Spanish being also spoken by many of the teachers, the pupils enjoy every facility for perfecting them- selves in these languages.

Lessons in Vocal and Instrumental Music are given, as also in Drawing and Painting of the several varieties now in vogue. Plain and useful needlework is considered indispensable, but should the Parents desire it the pupil may take lessons in embroidery and all kinds of lancy work, hair work, and wax, paper and mushn flowers.

Every quarter, to excite laudable emulation, the young lady who has most distinguished j herself in her class is rewarded by the honorary decoration of a medal. At the same time 1 ft bulletins are forwarded to Parents or Guardians, in which are faithfully reported the conduct, j§ proficiency and health of their daughters or wards. '

The scholastic year consists of one session, which commences on the fir«t of September- and closes about the fifteenth of July. Pupils are not received for less than half a session, and no deduction for temporary absence is made, except in case of sickness.

At the close of the scholastic year, after a thorough examination of classes. Premiums will be distributed, and those pupils who have concluded their course of studies will receive a Diploma or Certificate of Merit, when such distinction is deserved.

DUTCH FLAT, sometimes called German Level, is one of the oldest mining towns in the State. The prin- cipal part of the town lies in something of a hollow nearly a mile from the station, but is anything but flat. The first miners were Germans, and the pack- ers who carried them provisions, named the place, by describing it as that little Dutch Flat, meaning that level portion of the town now known as Stockton street. cause of its healthful climate, being neither too high or too low. People are realizing this, and are building substantial, and in some cases elegant, resi- dences, and making them home-like and luxurious with fruits and flowers. Dutch Flat has never been destroyed by fire, which is very remarkable. Many of the frail buildings first erected have fallen, and are being replaced by those having more solid founda- tions. Mining is the principal business, but the existence of the town does not depend on the mines. There are large saw mills, and ranches of various kinds all about the place, and many who reside here are engaged in business of various kinds elsewhere, which gives the town a permanancy it would not have if entirely dependent upon mining. There are three neat churches here, two of which have costly bells, and a pleasant school-building. There are five flourishing fraternal organizations here; the names — Odd Fellows, Red Men, Knights and Good Templars. Durst D. P., physician, Wheatland.

FOLSOM, situated in Sacramento County at the base of the Sierra Nevadas and on the south side of the American River, is twenty-two miles northeast of Sacramento City, with which it is connected by the Sacramento Yalley Rail Road — the first built in the State — there this road is met by the Placerville and Sacramento Yalley Rail Road, extending on to Shingle ^^prings. The local trade of the lower por- tions of Placer and El Dorado Counties centers here. North and east of Folsom are extensive mines, and to the south and west lies a valuable farming coun- try. The culture of the vine is fast surpassing that of all other interests; the noted Natoma Yineyard is in this neighbourhood, and the raisin grape is ex- tensively cultivated near the foot hills. There are also large granite quarries near here, which supplied material for the basement of the State Capitol. The scenery above Folsom is beautiful and the town itself very pleasant, the people social, hospitable and cultivated, showing a refined state of society. One newspaper, The Telegraph, is issued here weekly.

GRASS YALLEY is situated in a verdant valley near a picturesque portion of the Sierra JNevadas. There are many ready to date the settlement of Grass Yal- ley as early as 1848. but none can give the name or any particulars of the early pioneer. The continued search for gold in this section was substantially re- warded from its earliest discovery. A little later — in 1850, after the opening of the placer mines — quartz was discovered, for which Grass Yalley has since been renowned. Although, as we have stated elsewhere the annual yield of the mines near Neva- da City, yet the permanent growth of Grass Yalley and its business interests plainly show these figures must be far exceeded by the mines in the vicinity of the latter place. The first quartz mill here erect- ed was in 1850, as an experiment, by Dr. Witten- bach, for J. Wright. The second by the Boston Company, in 1850. The first family located in this place was a Mr. Scott and wife, who came in the spring of 1850. In early times here, as in most portions of the State, Judge Lynch presided with promptness and decision, if not with legality and correctness. The first saw mill in Grass Yalley was constructed by Judge Walsh, in 1850. The first hotel was erected by Thomas Beatty, in 1850, and named the Beatty House. In 1851, the first school was opened by Miss Rosanna Farrington. In 1851, a post-ofiice was established, with Dr. C. D. Cleave- land as postmaster. Grass Yalley with all its pros- perity has had its losses — as the loss by fire, Sept. 13, 1855, will show, it being estimated at or above $'^50, 000. Several have since occurred, but of much less damage or severity. Since the first steps toward the permanent settlement of Grass Yalley, the improve- ments have steadily increased, and we could cite many interesting incidents, but time and space warn us to desist, and more especially as we had no

intention to attempt the history of the place. Quartz has been the chief interest, and has served not only to make Grass Yalley widely known, but one of the wealthiest inland towns of California.
